Through this toilsome world,alas!
Once and only once I pass;
If a kindness I may show,
If a good deed I may do
To a suffering fellow man,
Let me do it while I can,
No delay, for it is plain
I shall not pass this way again.

This little poem brings to mind the parable of the good Samaritan as recorded in Luke 10:30-37. After the priest and the Levite had passed by the wounded man, the Samaritan stopped and helped him. Jesus concludes by saying to the lawyer, “You go and do likewise.” This reminds us to be compassionate to our fellow man who might need our help. Proverbs 3:27 admonishes us : “Do not withhold good to those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.”
